NHS Interviews – Clinical Scenarios

There are many aspects involved in an NHS interview and the more you prepare, the more  likely you are to succeed. Clinical scenarios are a common tool used by hiring managers to  assess your ability to react quickly and show your knowledge and experience.

Clinical scenarios involve situations you will most likely come across during the job and give you  an opportunity to show your abilities.

How do you prepare for a clinical scenario?

Not knowing what the scenario will be can seem like a disadvantage when preparing. However,  the STAR approach provides you with the framework to easily answer any clinical scenario. • Situation – describe the situation as you recall it and what the challenge was • Task – let the hiring manager know what tasks were required

• Action – with each task mentioned, describe the actions you took to achieve them • Result – how did the actions you took work out and what was the end result?

Practise your answers with a few situations you have dealt with in the past to best prepare for  this question.

How to answer a clinical scenario

With any clinical scenario the hiring manager is looking to assess your competency and get an  idea for what kind of medical professional you are.

Listen carefully to the question they ask to ensure you are answering it correctly. Take your time  and don’t rush, that way you will be less likely to leave out any important information. Also,  answer honestly. Trying to embellish the situation will only leave you with more chance of  contradicting yourself. The hiring manager wants to assess you based on a real situation.
