Consultant in Acute Medicine

We are looking for a Consultant or Specialty Doctor in Acute Medicine to join a large department in a trust in the South West of England.

  • Consultant-led acute assessment, early discharge and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service.
  • The successful candidates would be expected to work cross site as we manage the transition to a single AMU and Medical SDEC on the Emergency site.
  • Applicants are expected to have a broad experience in medicine, to be able to manage appropriate patients in an Ambulatory Emergency Care setting
Essential qualifications:
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • Passed IELTS/OET with required score
  • GMC registration
  • Experience in General Medicine
  • Experience in Acute Medicine (desirable)

Main Duties of the job

You will work closely with the Emergency Department consultants, medical specialties and AMU staff on each hospital site to deliver optimum patient care and ensure we remain at the forefront of Acute Medicine.

This is a dynamic and progressive unit, with a strong multi-disciplinary team and excellent management support.

Applicants are expected to have a broad experience in medicine, to manage appropriate patients in an Ambulatory Emergency Care setting and to support colleagues to manage their patients in a similar way. There will be the opportunity to develop an area of special interest in line with existing services within the department.

The clinical commitment will primarily be in Acute Medicine and Same day Emergency Care (SDEC) on both sites with approximate 60/40 split of shifts between the sites Your workload will consist of:

  • Lead morning ward rounds on AMU reviewing all Acute Medical and General Medical patients as per timetable (approximately 20-25 patients per ward round). N.B. Speciality morning Post take ward rounds for Cardiology, Respiratory and Gastroenterology occur Monday to Friday.
  • Shop floor presence on AMU providing rolling ward round of new admissions as per timetable (10-15 per shift). Additional Acute Physician support will be present on the shop floor/SDEC for peak times.
  • Lead and run Medical SDEC alongside the ANPs, during their allocated clinical sessions (average10-15 new patients per day and 8-10 follow ups).
  • Contribute to the daily running and ongoing development of the rapid access/admission prevention service for appropriate medical referrals.
  • Stream patients from the Emergency Department to SDEC
  • See ‘medical‘ patients direct within ED and provide senior review
  • To support the existing and promote the provision of additional ambulatory care services.
  • To promote and champion Acute Medicine.
  • Provide teaching and training to junior doctors, nurse practitioners and allied professions within acute medicine.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the Acute Medicine directorate to facilitate the delivery of planned reconfiguration of health care.
  • Participate in departmental Audit and governance.
  • There is currently no commitment to the general medical on call.
