Consultant in Psychiatry for Adults with Learning Disabilites

We are looking for a Locum Consultant in Psychiatry for Adults with Learning Disabilites (Must have section 12 and AC approved clinician status to work as consultant level in UK, we would look at specialty doctor level also that have secured section 12 to then look to grow them to consultant level).

  • 37.5 hours per week – 10 sessions
  • 12-24 months Contract – with a view to applying for a substantive post if Specialist Registration
Essential qualifications:
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • GMC Registration
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due) within 6 months of interview date or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration

Main Duties of the job

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Psychiatry for Adults with Learning Disabilites to work in a service committed to addressing health inequalities for people with learning disabilities and have developed a Primary Care Liaison service in addition to the general hospital LD Liaison team. These teams are also passionate educators working closely with Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire People First in delivering sessions to groups including GP Trainees and Undergraduate medical students. These Teams are being further strengthened to create additional capacity and align to the wider Directorate support for Liaison and strengthen our earlier intervention and prevention model.

Purpose of the Post and General Responsibilities:

To provide, with consultant colleagues and other clinicians (as appropriate) a service in Intellectual Disability Psychiatry and to support the development of sub-speciality interest to the hospitals and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.
All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for their own clinical competence and should limit their actions to those for which they are deemed competent. Clinical staff are also required to comply with the requirements of their professional organisation regarding supervision.
As a senior employee of the Health Board, the post holder will work in close cooperation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Health Board’s patients.
Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To ensure the provision and delivery of a first class clinical service.
  • To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality.
  • To sustain and develop teaching and research wherever appropriate.
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies.
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Health Board’s service plans.
  • To contribute to the Consultant on-call rota (1 in 14 rota).
  • To maintain the confidence of business plans and development strategies formulated for the specialty or the Health Board.
  • Core clinical expertise in the field of Intellectual Disability Psychiatry.
  • Experience and knowledge of running a specialty service.
  • Leadership and team building skills as well as working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Supporting and training multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Participating in CPD including Audit.
  • You are expected to maintain your professional development for Revalidation.
  • A Teaching and Training role for medical undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Supervisor role to Junior and Middle Grade Medical Staff.
  • To undertake regular multi-disciplinary clinical audit and provide evidence based medicine.

The post holder will provide specialist community psychiatric care to people with intellectual disabilities who reside within the county of Pembrokeshire. Pembrokeshire Community Team for Learning Disabilities. The team is based at Llanion House, Pembroke Dock in Pembrokeshire. The Psychiatrist’s office and secretarial support is based within the same building. There are roughly 420 cases open to the team with a Psychiatric caseload of 110.
