How to Apply for a CESR

A CESR is necessary for non-locum doctors to enter the UK and work within the NHS. Many doctors ask us how to apply for a CESR and what it means. So, we created this guide to help you find your dream job within the NHS.

What is CESR?

CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) is necessary for international doctors to work within the NHS. With a CESR, you can then be placed on the GMC specialist register. UK residents can obtain a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training), but international applicants must prove they have an equivalent certification via the CESR pathway.

Who Can Apply for CESR?

CESR applicants must hold a relevant specialist qualification and have conducted specialist training of 6 months or more. Fortunately, international doctors from any country in the world can apply.

Applying for CESR Without NHS Experience

It is possible to apply for CESR without NHS experience. However, it can be difficult to succeed in your application without NHS experience. Typically, it will take an applicant without NHS experience around 6-9 months to gather the evidence required to pass. Many doctors choose the route of first working in the NHS as a locum doctor, as they do not require CESR.

Working in the NHS Without CESR

Speciality Doctors, Specialists or Locum Consultants are eligible to work in the NHS without joining the GMC specialist register. Whilst in the UK, you can then submit a CESR application far more easily.

Ready to Work in the NHS?

Due to the difficulty many international applicants face with the GMC specialist register and CESR, we suggest joining the NHS as a speciality doctor, specialist or locum consultant. To learn more about gaining NHS experience, get in touch with us today.
