One of the reasons so many people choose to work for the NHS is the salary and the benefits. As one of the most developed health systems in the world, NHS doctors are compensated well for their contribution.
Today we’re going to cover a range of NHS employee benefits and what that means for you.
Generous Annual Leave
Within the NHS you are granted a generous annual leave allowance. What’s more, that allowance rises depending on how many years you work within the NHS.
Here is a list of the current NHS annual leave allowance:
Length of Service | Annual leave allowance |
0-5 years | 27 days + 8 bank holidays |
After 5 years | 29 days + 8 bank holidays |
After 10 years | 33 days + 8 bank holidays |
Regular Pay Enhancements
Working in medicine requires out of hours working, shifts, overtime and working on call. Fortunately, the NHS rewards all of that with additional pay and compensation, allowing you to increase your take-home pay each month
Opportunities to Develop Your Career
One thing the NHS excels in is ensuring employees have the opportunity to develop personally and within their career. Annual reviews help support your career aspirations with regular check-ins.
Ample Sick Leave
Unlike many countries, sick leave in the NHS is not deducted from your annual leave. What’s more, if you fall sick on your annual leave you can try to claim that day back to use another time.
World Class Maternity Leave
All NHS employees receive 1 year maternity leave. During this time your employer cannot fire you. Depending on your length of service, you may be eligible for maternity pay.
Great Paternity Leave
Fathers are offered 2 weeks paternity leave. Same-sex partners and nominated carers for single months are also eligible for this benefit.
Paternal Leave Benefits
In addition to the above, you are entitled to 18 weeks parental leave for each child until that child reaches 18 years of age. Whilst most of this is unpaid, some weeks may be paid.
Your NHS Pension
The NHS pension scheme is one of the best available currently. All employees are automatically enrolled into the scheme.
Useful NHS Discounts
NHS employees are highly regarded across the UK. As such, you may receive discounts in shops, restaurants and hotels wherever you go.
Benefits for Doctors in Training
Doctors in training can also receive the following benefits:
Extended Study Leave
Trainees at FY2 or higher receive paid study leave. Most often this is 30 days a year, with 20 assigned to compulsory teaching and 10 for you to assign as you wish.
Your Study Budget
Courses and conferences are important parts of training to become a doctor. You will receive a budget towards these as an NHS employee.
Valuable Study Sessions
In addition to study leave, you will receive half a day or 2 half days per week allocated to audits, presentations, publications and research.
